KENILWORTH, 7 SEPTEMBER 2002 — Members of the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA) will shed no tears at the death of arch-homophobe Baroness Young, the champion of the Christian Institute.
GALHA spokesperson George Broadhead said: “Lady Young will go down in gay history as the most high profile Anglican homophobe on a par with the Roman Catholic Cardinal Winning and the Judaist Lord Jakobovits.
“Spurred on by her biblical convictions, she vigorously opposed the human rights of Britain’s lesbian and gay community. In the House of Lords, she opposed the lowering of the age of consent for gay men and the repeal of Section 28 and, had she still been alive and kicking, she would have opposed the forthcoming Adoption Bill giving the right of lesbian and gay couples to adopt. The House of Lords will be a more humane place without her.”
