SAD DEATH OF A GAY HUMANIST

The Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA) is shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death of Ian Dunn, one of its most longstanding members in Scotland.

Ian joined GALHA in 1989 and hosted socials for local GALHA members at his home in Edinburgh, including Ralph Simmonds, a friend and former fellow committee member of Outright Scotland. On learning of Ian’s death, Ralph commented: “I was greatly shocked to hear of his death. I had met him only a couple of weeks ago and had no knowledge of his heart condition. He was very energetic in all his many interests, and passionate in his beliefs. He had a most persuasive and friendly manner.”

Some years ago Ian undertook to conduct Humanist wedding ceremonies for gay and lesbian couples, ceremonies which were inaugurated by GALHA as secular alternatives to the Christian "blessing". These became very popular and many were held at the Edinburgh Lesbian Gay and Bisexual Centre.

GALHA Secretary George Broadhead said: “Ian was one of our best known and most valued members. His commitment to many good causes showed that you don’t have to be religious to have concern and compassion for your fellow human beings.”
